In these tough economic times, our local communities are facing tremendous financial challenges. Middle to low-income families have been disproportionately devastated by the unprecedented financial crisis facing our state.

To help you and your family better understand and better plan for your financial futures, we are offering our Third Annual Financial Planning Day, which will include free and private financial consultations with certified financial planning professionals. Whether you need guidance with basic financial planning or more specialized advice on retirement planning, investment strategies, estate planning, tax issues, insurance, employee benefits or other special circumstances, highly competent financial planners and experts will be available to assist you.

Participants can receive as many private consultations or attend as many of the free educational workshops as they like.

Planning for your financial future is more important than ever and by bringing together local communities and certified financial planners, we are offering individuals the opportunity to take control of their finances. The valuable services provided at this highly anticipated event are free, confidential, and unlimited! The Rockridge District Association is pleased to bring you “Rockridge Out & About” on Sunday, September 26th.  This event will showcase the best of the Rockridge and North Oakland neighborhoods, including local businesses–from boutiques to restaurants to book stores and more–as well as health forums, live music and dancing, cooking demonstrations, children activities, a fashion show, and more!  For more information, visit their website.

The Consumer Credit Counseling Services of San Francisco host a number of free financial education workshops every month that cover a multitude of financial-related topics.  From better money management to information for first time home buyers, there is a lot of useful and relevant information presented in these workshops and worth checking out.  Workshops are free, but you do have to RSVP to save a spot in the workshop.  For more information, check out the CCCS website.

The YWCA in Downtown Berkeley is offering a free workshop on how to develop a successful personal spending plan.  In this workshop, you will learn how to identify the difference between a spending plan and a budget; how to use a spending plan; and how to build a sold, prudent reserve/contingency fund (3-6 months living expenses).  The workshop is free, but you must RSVP to attend!  Sign up by emailing ywmoney@ywca-berkeley.org with RSVP and the workshop date in the Subject Line and your full name in the body of the email. The new Beehive Market, celebrating all that is green and local, is opening in Berkeley on June 12th.  Think of it as an expanded farmer’s market, featurning food and product vendors, live music, and more.  They will be open every Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on San Pablo Avenue at Virginia Street in West Berkeley.  To find out more about the event, or to find out how to get involved as a vendor or sponsor, visit their website.

Jack London Square is hosting many fun, free events this summer, including:

Dancing Under the Stars

Every Friday evening, from 8:30-10 PM, at the foot of Broadway.  Enjoy a free dance lesson provided by the Linden Street Dance Studio!  Each week will feature a different dance.

Lunchtime Live!

Every Tuesday and Friday, starting in July, from noon-2PM.  Grab lunch at Jack London Square and enjoy free live music by a different group each time.

Waterfront Flicks

Every other Thursday evening, starting July 8th.  Free movie starting at sundown, with Oakland Trivia games hosted by the Oakbook starting at 7:30 PM.
