OneCalifornia Foundation and Bank have 6 internship positions available for summer of 2010.  These internships are for college juniors and seniors interested in finance, business, marketing and communications, particularly those interested in socially-responsible business. The internships provide an opportunity to work at an innovative institution helping to develop new models for socially-responsible banking and financial services.

Four interns will work on projects for the Foundation and two will work on projects for the bank, both located on Webster Street in downtown Oakland, CA.  Each intern will work on a specific project or set of projects and will also participate in a unique curriculum which covers banking and finance basics and their roles in the community, as well as innovative models for community and socially- and environmentally-responsible finance. This curriculum will be covered over a five-week period, with a different topic delivered each week by industry experts, occasionally off-site at various locations.

Program Dates
June 21 to July 29, 2010 (6 weeks). 
Interns must be in town during this entire period and able to come into the office in downtown Oakland 4 days per week.

Weekly schedule
Monday – Thursday from 9:30 to 5:00 pm

Stipend
$100/week

The Internship Curriculum will cover the following topics:
Week 1: Banking Basics

  1. What is a bank, and exactly what does it do?
  2. What is its role / function in the economy?
    • How does it benefit the community?
    • How does it benefit individuals?
  3. How does it make a profit?
  4. Commercial banks, investment banks
  5. Types of banks - Community banks, community development banks, CDFIs, credit unions, community development credit unions
  6. Traditional banks and the Community Reinvestment Act
  7. Ethics and Legal Issues in the Banking industry

Week 2: Banking Operations

  1. Depository Functions
  2. Lending Functions
  3. Investment Functions
  4. Other Related Systems
  5. Financial Ratios
  6. Other products: ATM, Credit Cards, Pre-paid cards

Week 3: Lending

  1. Mortgages
  2. Commercial (business) lending
  3. SBA Loans
  4. Micro lending
  5. Other loans (auto loans, etc.)
  6. Responsible Alternatives to Predatory Practices:
    • Check Cashing, Payroll Deposit and ACH Transfer
    • Responsible Emergency Lending (Alternative to Payday Lenders)

Week 4: Investing

  1. Basic definitions, instruments, and principles
  2. Individual / Group / Institutional
  3. Stock Market / Mutual Funds / Indexes
  4. Community Investing

Week 5: Double and Triple Bottom Line Organizations
